Making you believe in customer service again . . .
It began with a feeling, an idea that things could be different, that customers didn’t have to be numbers, and that it was more important to match a device to a person than just to sell it. It was an idea that a company could be better, could be part of the solution.
Will Dearman had seen many companies struggle. He had even seen them fail. As a commercial banker at an international bank, Will had seen many of the mistakes that businesses can make. And he saw that even many successful businesses weren’t living up to their full potential. He knew that a company could be different; he knew that a company could be better, and he wanted to make that happen.
Before Will had ever thought about GPS he knew that he wanted to build something. He wanted to build a company, to create something and make it grow. Technology was a natural fit for this budding new creation. Ever since Will was little, he loved everything and anything to do with technology. When he could barely talk, he was asking for calculators for his birthdays just so he could push the buttons. Will may have grown up, but his love of the newest innovations had not faded.
It was almost serendipitous that at the same time that Will had finally decided to leave the safety of the bank a small GPS business came up for sale. It was almost too perfect, a company that married his love of technology with the opportunity to help people. It was a small business with a terrible interface and hardly any customers, but Will saw through all of that to its potential. Here was a platform on which to build his company, his different, better company. And that is exactly what he did. A big leap of faith and a lot of work later, LocationStore.com was born.
Today, LocationStore.com combines outstanding customer service with the latest news and information on everything GPS-related. From the buying guide to our blog and video reviews, everything is designed to create an experience that matches people with the right devices for them, not just sell a product for its own sake. Will’s vision means that we don’t try to upsell you, or downplay problems with a device just to make a sale. He believes that you are the best person to decide what device is right for you, and all that we need to do is to give you the right information to make that decision. Will’s vision for a better company also means that customer service is our number one priority. You’ll notice that our phone number is big and bold on our front page, and that’s because we aren’t afraid of you calling. We don’t hide the ball, or force you to send an e-mail to ask a question. Every phone call is answered or returned by our staff in Austin, Texas.
LocationStore.com is a different kind of company than those big-box stores and huge online retailers. It’s a better kind of company, and it’s everything that Will imagined it could be. Will runs and manages LocationStore.com with his partner and wife, Cara. Will has slowly been convincing Cara to hang up her law degree in favor of being a full-time GPS Renaissance woman, and it may be working. Will and Cara live in Austin, Texas with LocationStore.com’s two mascots: Lucy and Beck. When not at work, you can usually find them testing out new GPS devices in the Hill Country around Austin, making time for friends and family, or trying to finally beat Super Mario 3.
LocationStore.com Mascots
"Lucy"
- Breed – Terrier Mix
- Adopted – 12/04/07
- Favorite Activity – jogging, tug-of-war
- Favorite Toy – Flashing red ball
- Favorite Treat – Yogurt
- Favorite GPS Device – Garmin Forerunner 205
This sweet girl became a member of the LocationStore.com pack when Cara found her wandering through their neighborhood. Severely underweight and covered in fleas and animal bites, Lucy had no reason to trust anyone. But when she saw Cara stop her car, all that Lucy saw was a new friend. Lucy followed Cara back to her car and the rest is history. She’s all healed up now, though she still has a few scars from her time on the streets. Lucy’s main personality trait is an unquenchably sunny disposition. She has never met anyone that she didn’t like.
Lucy loves to go jogging with Cara, and gets excited when she sees her start to lace up her running shoes. Because of Lucy’s inexhaustible energy, Cara is always the first to head for home. Lucy knows that she could run a marathon, if only Cara would let her. A Garmin Forerunner keeps her apprised of her fastest times and longest runs, though she wishes they could be longer. But, at the end of a long day, she loves to curl up with her pack.
"Beck"
- Breed – Basset/Lab Mix
- Adopted – 7/29/07
- Favorite Activity – tracking, sleeping
- Favorite Toy – Frisbee
- Favorite Treat – Pupperoni
- Favorite GPS Device - Garmin Colorado 400t
Beck didn’t used to have the best sense of direction. That’s how he wound up with Will and Cara! He wandered right into their back yard one day. After a few weeks, it became clear that his old owners didn’t want him, and he officially became LocationDog. Sometimes referred to as “Napoleon”, Beck is a social climber and is always trying to be top dog. His sister, Lucy, usually puts down these coup d’états by sitting on him.
He may not have started with the best sense of direction, but he’s more than made up for it now. Maybe it’s the Basset, or one the other numerous breeds in there, but Beck was born to track. He can often be found sniffing out a search pattern in the back yard, or playing “Find It” in the house. His all-time favorite, though, is when he gets taken on a GPS field-testing trip out to the Hill Country. He sticks his nose out of the window all the way there, and can’t wait to get going once the car door is opened. If his owners didn’t have a Garmin Colorado to help them, they might get hopelessly lost with all his wandering!
